On Windows, they had to bake something in order for the Textmate bundles that depends on POSIX to be able to run - yes, one of the features of e-TextEditor is to be able to run some Textmate bundles.īecause of this, on the first time you run it, it will recommend you to install Cygwin as well, which is a semi-POSIX compliant environment for Windows. But I can understand that development for Windows is way more difficult, specially considering that on the Mac we can count on having a POSIX environment underneath. Textmate (exclusive for the Mac) costs *USD 63* which is also not cheap but it is full featured. It is not free by any means, it costs *USD 34.95* which is not cheap but I think it is fair if they start to speed up the development process a bit. When you have a problem, you won't know if it is your code that is buggy or if it is the IDE misbehaving, and you will waste a lot of time. If you're a beginner I recommend to stay away from heavy IDEs: they are not 100% ready for prime time yet. I still think Eclipse/Netbeans based solutions are overkill. It is nowhere near Textmate's full set of features, there are a few glitches, but it works well enough most of the time, so I recommend it. I've been trying different editors under Windows and I think this is the closest you will ever get to the all mighty "TextMate": that we, Mac users, have. This is the Dev Kit version, which comes bundled with everything you should need to build *native extensions*!
